A stream of water spills into a pool, bubbling on the surface.

Welcome to the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative blog

Arizona is one of the top 10 fastest growing states in the U.S., but it ranks second from last in terms of average rainfall. We need new technologies and policies to support transformative adaptation and a thriving future in the face of complex water challenges in our state. That's where the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative (AWII) comes in.

AWII is a $40 million, multi-year partnership with the state of Arizona led by Arizona State University’s Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory in collaboration with the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. Supported by the state of Arizona, alongside a $5 million gift from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, AWII officially launched in April 2023. We're working with partners across the state to harness the power of ASU’s innovation engine to develop and implement cutting-edge solutions to our water problems and help to ensure a bright future for our state.

Our goal is to ensure a sustainable water future for a thriving Arizona. We're doing this through actions including:

  • Funding research and development of new water technologies.
  • Engaging with communities to develop solutions that meet their specific needs.
  • Providing policy support to document effective actions on water conservation and innovation.

We'll be using this blog to share updates on our progress, highlight the work of our researchers and partners, and provide insights into the latest water news and trends.

You can look forward to reading about important Arizona water issues, including:

  • The latest research on water augmentation, desalination, and other water technologies.
  • Insights from experts on the future of water in Arizona.
  • Stories about how communities are working together to solve their water challenges.

We hope you'll find our blog informative and inspiring. Please sign up for our mailing list and share!
