Rural Groundwater Resilience Workshop: Patagonia-Sonoita-Elgin

The Arizona Water Innovation Initiative, in partnership with the Arizona Institute for Resilience at the University of Arizona, the Lincoln Institute’s Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy, and Southwest Decision Resources lead the Rural Groundwater Resilience Workshop series.

Co-designed with each community, our workshops combine science, policy, and engagement to help Arizonans tackle rural groundwater challenges. We provide facts, tools, and resources to support local conversations and groundwater protection strategies.

The Patagonia-Sonoita-Elgin region hosted a Rural Groundwater Resilience Workshop in October 2025.

  • 50+ participants representing: Elected Officials, Local Government, Nonprofits, Advocacy Groups, Economic Development,  Ranching, and Mining
  • Delivered science-based insights on groundwater systems, policy options, climate impacts, and more using up-to-date local data
  • Identified key priorities—including state policy advocacy, recharge projects, county planning updates, and a regional monitoring network

Workshop Synthesis

Held October 30, 2025, the Patagonia-Sonoita-Elgin Rural Groundwater Resilience Workshop brought together 50 residents, local leaders, and technical experts in a community-led process to build understanding, identify strategies, and chart a path forward for rural groundwater resilience.

The report includes a workshop overview, key insights, needs and opportunities for resilience, and plans for the path forward.
